Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach to healing that aims to alleviate tension and promote balance within the body. It is based on the concept of the craniosacral system, which includes the cranium (skull) and sacrum (tailbone) plus the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

The cranial bones are joined at the sutures which permit a small degree of flexibility. When the sutures are jammed this interferes with the normal craniosacral rhythm, which is thought to be caused by movement of the cerebrospinal fluid as it moves through the central nervous system. This rhythm can become disrupted due to physical or emotional stress, injury, illness, or trauma, especially to the head. Through light touch and gentle pressure, the therapist aims to release restrictions and tension in the craniosacral system, helping to restore the normal flow and allowing the body to return to balance.

Craniosacral therapy is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including headaches, neck and back pain, stress, anxiety, jaw joint (TMJ) disorder and chronic fatigue. It is also an important treatment for general trauma, concussion and other head injuries.

This therapy helps restore a person’s ability to relax instead of being in “overdrive mode”. Sessions are typically deeply restorative and clients may experience a sense of calm, balance, increased vitality and better sleep after a session.

Craniosacral therapy is considered a complementary therapy that can be a valuable addition to a person’s healthcare routine, helping them to manage pain, reduce stress, and improve overall quality of life.
